The cultivation of mindfulness is rooted in Buddhism, but many religions include some type of prayer or meditation technique that helps focus a distracted mind on the present and lends appreciation for the moment itself. It also means accepting the moment for what it is, without judgment.
Being quiet amid the chaos is by no means an easy task, but the active practice of mindfulness supports positive attitudes that contribute to a more satisfied life. It allows you to fully experience and engage in activities and creates a framework from which you can more easily deal with negative events.
By products of mindfulness include decreased stress levels and blood pressure, improved sleep, a reduction in chronic pain and increased satisfaction with life in general.
Studies have shown that this technique is helpful in treating depression, substance abuse, eating disorders and anxiety disorders, among other illnesses.
